About Pantelis Pantelidis

Early Life

Pantelis Pantelidis (1983–2016) was born on November 23, 1983, in Athens and grew up in Nea Ionia. His mother's family came from Agrinio, while his father's roots traced to the Isparta region of Asia Minor. He served as a non-commissioned officer in the Hellenic Navy before resigning in 2013 to pursue music full-time. Entirely self-taught as both a guitarist and songwriter, he began by performing videos of his own compositions on YouTube.

Musical Style & Sound

Pantelidis performed Laïko, known for direct, heartfelt lyrics and a distinct voice that connected deeply with listeners. He became widely regarded as the first Greek artist to rise to stardom through the internet rather than traditional industry channels, a shift that shaped both his sound and his relationship with fans.

Career Rise

In 2012, Pantelidis posted a video of himself performing the ballad "Den Tairiazete Sou Lew" on acoustic guitar, which went viral within weeks and led to a contract with Minos EMI. His debut album, "Alkoolikes oi Nychtes," released that same year, went double platinum. He won the MAD Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 2013, and all four of his albums achieved commercial success during his brief career. He collaborated with major established Greek artists, including Vasilis Karras and Despina Vandi, and wrote hit songs for other artists such as Giannis Ploutarchos and Paola. In 2015, he was named Best Greek Male Singer at the MAD Video Music Awards, an honor he received again posthumously in 2016. He died on February 18, 2016, in a car accident in Elliniko, Athens, at thirty-two; thousands gathered at the Church of Agios Spyridon in Nea Ionia for his funeral.

Diaspora Impact

Pantelidis's status as the first Greek artist to build his fame through YouTube rather than traditional gatekeepers has given his music particular reach among younger diaspora audiences who discovered him online rather than through radio or touring. Ten years after his death, his songs continue to resonate across Greece and the global Greek diaspora, with posthumous releases still charting.
