About the Beach
Achata is one of the most famous and photographed beaches on the island, situated at the end of a deep valley surrounded by high cliffs. The shore consists of small white pebbles and the water is an intense, deep blue that is incredibly clear. It is partially organized with a small taverna and some umbrellas, but the scale of the cliffs gives it a very powerful and natural feel. The water gets deep quite quickly, offering a vigorous and refreshing swim. Because it is sheltered by the mountains, it is often protected from the strongest winds. It is a must-visit for anyone who wants to see the dramatic, mountainous coastline of Karpathos meeting the Aegean. The drive down the winding road offers spectacular views of the bay and the surrounding limestone formations, making the journey part of the overall experience.
