Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a beach with specific features?

Type what you're looking for into the search box, such as "sandy," "shade," "parking" or "Seatrac," and add an island to narrow it down. You can also combine features, for example "family friendly sandy beach in Crete."

Are beaches in Greece free?

Most are. By law, the Greek coastline is public, so you can lay your towel on almost any beach for free. On organized beaches you'll usually pay to use sunbeds and umbrellas, often with a minimum spend at the beach bar.

What is the difference between organized and non-organized beaches?

Organized beaches have facilities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and sometimes lifeguards. Non-organized beaches have little or nothing, so bring your own shade, water and food. Semi-organized beaches fall in between, with some facilities on part of the beach.

What is Seatrac?

Seatrac is a Greek-developed system that lets people with mobility impairments get into the sea on their own. A solar-powered seat runs on a rail from the beach into the water, with no need to be carried. Search "Seatrac" to see the beaches that have one.

When is the best time to visit Greek beaches?

June to September is beach season. The sea is warmest in August and September, and June and September are quieter and cooler than the peak summer months.

Why is it so windy on some islands?

In July and August, a strong northern wind called the meltemi blows across the Aegean, especially in the Cyclades. On windy days, beaches on the south side of an island are usually calmer and more sheltered.

Do I need water shoes?

They're a good idea on pebble and rocky beaches, which are easier on your feet with them and can have sea urchins near the rocks. On sandy beaches you'll rarely need them.

Which beaches in Greece are best for families?

Look for beaches with sand, shallow water, easy access and nearby facilities. Search "family friendly" to see beaches suited to children, and add "shade" or "food" if you need them.
