History

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Brockton, Massachusetts was established in 1916 by Greek immigrants who had made their home in the city of Brockton, a community with more than a century of Hellenic presence. Brockton drew Greek immigrants in the early twentieth century as it did workers of many nationalities, its economy anchored by the shoe manufacturing industry that made the city one of the most productive in New England. The Greek families who settled there sought to preserve their faith, language, and culture, and the Annunciation parish became the center around which that Hellenic community life revolved.

The first priest of the parish, the Reverend Evangelos Prevezas, served from February 1916, and a succession of clergy have guided the community through more than a century of parish life since. The Annunciation holds the distinction of being the only Eastern Orthodox church in Brockton and its surrounding communities, a role that has given it a particular importance as a spiritual home for Orthodox Christians of all backgrounds throughout the greater Brockton area.

Today, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church serves more than 400 devoted Orthodox stewards at 457 Oak Street in Brockton as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, hosting two beloved annual Greek festivals and carrying forward the Hellenic Orthodox heritage its founders planted in southeastern Massachusetts more than a century ago.
