History
Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church of Lecanto, Florida owes its existence to the tireless and loving work of a small group of dedicated Orthodox Christians who came together in 1981 to build a spiritual home in Citrus County. In those early years the community gathered for worship services in the Cantonis Parish Center, a practical arrangement that sustained the parish as it grew and deepened its roots in the community. Though adequate for worship, the faithful longed to create a proper church structure that would glorify the Lord, and a building committee was formed to begin the long work of planning and fundraising.
The building committee, led by Stephan Ponticos as chairman and Dr. George Mavros as co-chairman, spent several years planning the new church alongside the parish council and the broader community. Groundbreaking was celebrated on February 26 and 27, 2005, and after five years of construction the new church opened on May 22, 2010, visible from Gulf to Lake Highway atop a knoll on the parish property. One cherished story from the construction period recalls the parish priest at the time, who had a fear of heights yet rode a cherry picker all the way to the top of the building to bless the cross that graces its peak. The interior has continued to be enriched since the opening, with a full iconostasis installed in May 2022 that frames the altar area with Byzantine sacred imagery. The Cantonis Parish Center remains an active part of the parish campus, serving as the fellowship hall and the site of the beloved Friday Fish Fry and annual Greek Festival.
