History
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Clearwater, Florida was founded in 1969 by Greek Americans who sought to establish an Orthodox Christian community in Pinellas County. It holds the distinction of being the third oldest Greek Orthodox community in the Tampa Bay area. The original church at 409 South Old Coachman Road was consecrated on Christmas Eve 1969, and from that first service the parish became the spiritual home for generations of Clearwater families who gathered there for baptisms, weddings, funerals, and the full rhythm of Orthodox Christian life.
For decades the church served as a center of Greek Orthodox community in Clearwater, growing to more than 550 families and extending its reach through educational programs, philanthropic ministries, and its popular annual Clearwater GreekFest, one of Pinellas County's oldest and most beloved cultural celebrations. When the church was consecrated in 1969, church officials installed a small box inside the altar containing relics of saints and irreplaceable sacred objects, embedding the parish's spiritual foundation in the very structure of its worship space.
On February 7, 2015, an unattended candle ignited a fire that spread quickly through the front of the church. By the time firefighters arrived, smoke and water damage had destroyed approximately 40 percent of the building. The damage was ultimately assessed as beyond renovation. Though the congregation was devastated, it did not falter. Services were moved immediately to the church gymnasium, which the faithful began calling the church-nasium, where they worshipped for nearly five years while the new church was built around the salvaged altar and a stunning Italian mosaic of the Virgin Mary with the Christ child, both preserved through careful and painstaking effort by Kokolakis Contracting, the firm that led the rebuilding.
The new church opened on Christmas Eve 2019, exactly fifty years to the day from the original consecration. Its classic Byzantine architecture, golden dome, and iconography carry forward the traditions of the generation that first built a home for Greek Orthodox worship in Clearwater, now passed to the generation that rebuilt it. Today, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church stands at 409 South Old Coachman Road as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta, a community that proved its faith not only in worship but in resilience.
