History

The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Grand Blanc, Michigan traces its roots to the city of Flint, where the first Greek immigrants arrived in the early decades of the twentieth century and organized a community of faith that would serve them for nearly a century before finding its present home. The parish's earliest organizing moment came on a significant date: in 1928, during a Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Grace Bishop Filaretos of Chicago, the community received renewed fervor and formally established its institutional life. A Sunday School and Greek School were organized, a mixed choir of adults and children was formed, and the Philoptochos Society was established under the direct encouragement of the then Archbishop of North and South America, later His All Holiness Patriarch Athenagoras. The Philoptochos built a parish home for the priest and his family, a practical expression of the women's commitment to sustaining the church's ministry.

Under the long and devoted pastoral leadership of the Reverend Father Demetrios G. Koursaris, the Assumption family grew until its original Flint location could no longer accommodate the congregation. In 1961 a new church was built at G-3170 West Beecher Road in Flint, serving the faithful for nearly half a century as the parish continued to grow under a succession of devoted clergy. By the first decade of the twenty-first century the community had followed the southward migration of the greater Flint area's population into the suburbs of Genesee County. In 2010 the Assumption family moved to its newest and current location at 2245 East Baldwin Road in Grand Blanc Township, establishing a new chapter in a history that stretches back nearly a century.
