History

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan was founded by Semendrian Greeks and other Christians from Asia Minor, immigrants who had fled the catastrophic destruction of Greek communities in western Anatolia in the early 1920s and made their way to Oakland County, Michigan, bringing with them a fierce devotion to their faith and a determination to rebuild their community life in a new land.

The parish's first church was built on Hill Street in Pontiac in 1928, giving the community its first permanent home. As the congregation grew, a larger second church was built on Mariva Street in Pontiac in 1931. By the mid-1960s the community had followed the suburban migration of its membership northward into Oakland County's affluent suburbs, and in 1966 the current church was built at its present location in Bloomfield Hills, the home the parish has occupied for nearly six decades.

From its founding, Saint George has maintained what it describes as a steadfast commitment to The Way, the earliest name by which Christianity was known among its first disciples. The parish has always understood its calling as both apostolic and evangelical, rooted in the tradition of the first Apostles and simultaneously called to go out and share that faith with others, welcoming all who seek Orthodox Christian worship regardless of ethnic background.

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church at 37100 Dequindre Road in Bloomfield Hills serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Oakland County as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Detroit within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community whose Asia Minor roots and nearly a century of parish life in Michigan have shaped one of the most distinctive congregations in the Detroit metropolitan area.
