History
Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church of Reno, Nevada traces its origins to around 1960, when the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association purchased a one-acre parcel of land in what was then southwest Reno, an area that would later become one of the city's most prestigious neighborhoods. AHEPA's intention was to build a hall of its own, but the organization made the generous decision to gift the land toward the establishment of a Greek Orthodox community instead.
A church building and small hall soon followed, and the Greek Orthodox Church of Reno became a reality. Because there was no Diocesan architectural committee at the time and the community's funds were limited, the founders built an A-frame style church, a practical and economical design that nonetheless gave the young parish a worship space of its own. The project came to fruition because a handful of dedicated Greek Orthodox Christians were willing to extend themselves financially and make real sacrifices to see the church and hall built. The parish received its name from the late Pete Cladianos Sr., who chose Saint Anthony in honor of his beloved wife, Antonia, whose patron saint it was.
A fire later threatened the parish, but by good fortune neither the church nor the hall were destroyed, though significant smoke damage resulted. The community rallied in response, working toward a new and larger hall that was built in 1982 and dedicated in January 1983. Bishop Anthony, of blessed memory, played an instrumental role in helping the parish navigate the insurance process that made the new 6,400-square-foot hall possible, and it was dedicated to the memory of Pete Cladianos Sr. in recognition of his foundational role in the parish's history.
