History

Saint Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church of New Haven, Connecticut is the direct heir of Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, the Greek community established in New Haven in 1920 that served as the city's first Greek Orthodox parish for decades, functioning as a vital cultural and religious center for the immigrant community of New Haven. When Saint Barbara's congregation eventually relocated to the suburban town of Orange, Connecticut, it created a division within the New Haven Greek community: one part followed the church to Orange, while another part, led by Spyros Condos and others who felt strongly about maintaining an Orthodox Christian presence within the city itself, remained committed to keeping a church in downtown New Haven.

 

From that principled stand to remain in the city grew the parish that would become Saint Basil the Great. The community acquired land at 1 Tower Lane in 1988, the same year it grew to approximately fifty families and received its first full-time priest. In 1986 His Grace Bishop Anthony had formally named the community and bestowed upon it its patron, Saint Basil the Great, the fourth-century Archbishop of Caesarea whose theological brilliance, monastic vision, and extraordinary care for the poor have made him one of the most beloved Fathers of the Orthodox Church. A first church building was constructed on the Tower Lane property in 1998, and the parish celebrated its first Pascha in the building in 2018 after a new basilica-style structure was completed. On January 12, 2020, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America performed the Consecration of the church, completing its canonical standing and giving the community its fully consecrated permanent home in the heart of downtown New Haven.
