History
In the early 1950s, an exodus of Greek Orthodox families from Boston's urban center to the surrounding suburbs made clear the need for a new parish to serve the communities west of the city. In 1958, a church building and parish house were acquired in Newton Lower Falls, marking the humble beginnings of what would become St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, formally established in 1959.
The unbridled spirit of the young parish and its founding families grew quickly, and the community soon experienced tremendous enthusiasm and success that made the need for a larger church apparent early in its life. In 1964, a roughly four-acre parcel on Washington Street in Newton, opposite Newton-Wellesley Hospital, was purchased as an adequate site. But parishioners did not hesitate to consider an even more ambitious alternative: nearly two hundred acres of beautiful residential property known as the Blake Estate in Weston. St. Demetrios was ultimately destined for Weston, settling on a different site within that historic property. In 1965, Father George Gallos was appointed pastor, and the Board of Administration formed a Building Fund Committee to finance the land purchase and the construction that would follow.
Over the years that followed, the furnishings essential to a Greek Orthodox church, carpeting, pews, the baptismal font, the pulpit, the Bishop's throne, the chanter's stand, and the iconostasion, were placed through the dedicated efforts of many parishioners. Magnificent mosaics of Christ Pantokrator, Saint John the Baptist, the Theotokos, the Baptism of Christ, and the Resurrection were ordered from Italy and installed in time for the church's consecration. That consecration took place on Sunday, October 28, 1979, under the presidency of Gus Pappas, with Archbishop Iakovos officiating, assisted by His Grace Anthimos, Bishop of Boston.
St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church at 57 Brown Street in Weston serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the greater Boston area as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the beloved spiritual home of more than 600 families who trace their roots to a small group of suburban pioneers and a borrowed building in Newton Lower Falls.
