History

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Dartmouth, Massachusetts carries a history that began not in Dartmouth but in the city of New Bedford, where Greek immigrants had settled in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawn by the whaling and textile industries that defined the economic character of the South Coast. The parish was established in New Bedford, where it served the Greek Orthodox faithful of the region for many decades as the center of Hellenic community life in southeastern Massachusetts.

As the parish's membership spread across the suburbs south and west of New Bedford through the latter decades of the twentieth century, the community began planning for a new permanent home more accessible to its dispersed congregation. In 2004 the parish purchased six acres of land in North Dartmouth, and on November 11, 2007, Metropolitan Methodios of Boston officiated at the groundbreaking for a new community center that would serve as a temporary house of worship while construction proceeded. On the Sunday of Pentecost, June 7, 2009, Metropolitan Methodios presided at the Thyranoixia, the Opening of the Doors, of the new church at 186 Cross Road in Dartmouth, celebrating the first Hierarchical Divine Liturgy in what had become the parish's permanent new home, completing a journey that had carried the Greek Orthodox faithful of the South Coast from their first immigrant gathering places in New Bedford to a new campus in the surrounding countryside of Dartmouth.

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church at 186 Cross Road in Dartmouth serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the South Coast of Massachusetts as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
