History

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Pittsfield, Massachusetts was established in 1922 by a group of Greek immigrants primarily from the Peloponnesian areas of Langadia and Agios Petros, who had made their way to the Berkshires and sought to preserve their Orthodox Christian faith and Hellenic heritage in their new home at the western end of Massachusetts. In April 2022, the parish celebrated its centennial with Metropolitan Methodios of Boston presiding at the Divine Liturgy, followed by a banquet in the evening honoring a hundred years of Orthodox Christian witness in the Berkshires.

 

From its Greek immigrant origins the parish has evolved into a welcoming community that strives to serve the religious needs of all Orthodox Christians, including converts, those in interfaith marriages, the elderly, families, and young adults, reflecting a vision of Orthodoxy as a universal faith rather than an ethnic institution. Services are offered with the full apostolic tradition of the Orthodox Church, preserving the ancient liturgical life of Eastern Christianity in the mountains of western Massachusetts.
