History

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Rock Island, Illinois is one of the oldest Greek Orthodox parishes in the United States, founded in 1910 by Greek immigrants who had made their way to the Quad Cities in search of a new life. Mostly poor and uneducated when they arrived, these early settlers were proud of their roots and determined to succeed, and the church they established became the foundation on which generations of Greek-American family life in the Quad Cities was built.

From its origins as a simple gathering of ethnic Greeks a century ago, Saint George has grown and evolved through the decades, guided by successive priests and parish councils who sustained the Orthodox faith through the challenges and transformations that came with each generation. The parish celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010, honoring a century of worship, service, and community life in western Illinois.
