History

Saint Luke the Evangelist Greek Orthodox Church of Columbia, Missouri was formally established, named, and chartered in 2002 under the direction of His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago, bringing Orthodox Christian worship to the heart of mid-Missouri for the first time. The parish's first priest, Father Dean Panagos, was assigned the same year and served the community through 2006. Following an interim period, Father Michael Monos joined as pastor in 2009 and has led the parish since.

From its founding, Saint Luke's has been a Pan-Orthodox community in spirit and in practice, welcoming Orthodox Christians of every ethnic background, from Greek and Romanian to converts from across the region, all drawn together by the ancient faith in a university city at the crossroads of Missouri. The parish celebrated its tenth anniversary in March 2013 with a banquet and a hierarchical Divine Liturgy led by Metropolitan Iakovos. That same year Father Michael was invested with the office of Economos by the Metropolitan in recognition of his pastoral service. In 2012 the parish purchased twenty acres of land for future development and the construction of a traditional Orthodox church, a long-range vision for a permanent home worthy of the ancient faith.
