History

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of DeKalb, Illinois was founded in 1966, celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 2016 with an open house, anniversary gala, and a Pontifical Divine Liturgy presided over by His Grace Bishop Demetrios. The parish was established to bring Orthodox Christian worship to the DeKalb area, a community anchored by Northern Illinois University and the agricultural and commercial economy of north-central Illinois.

 

The parish has made its home at 320 South Second Street in DeKalb, a location in the heart of the city that has placed it within reach of the Greek Orthodox faithful scattered across DeKalb County and the surrounding region. From its founding generation of Greek immigrant families the parish has evolved into a welcoming Orthodox community whose doors are open to guests and all Orthodox Christians regardless of background, with a particular outreach to students at Northern Illinois University, where the parish has worked to establish and support the Orthodox Christian Fellowship campus ministry.
