History

In the 1960s, many Greeks left Chicago and moved to the suburbs, and by the late 1970s a second migration was underway as families moved further west into the Fox Valley. Many settled in and around Elgin, finding that the closest Greek Orthodox churches were more than a thirty-minute drive away. Approximately one hundred families, most of them immigrants working in the restaurant business, came together to start a church in their area, and Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church was established in 1979 to serve the Orthodox Christian community of the Fox Valley.

The parish's first home was a former Protestant church that the congregation adapted for Orthodox worship. Under the tenure of Father Peter Yannacopoulos, who served the parish from 1981 to 1985, the interior was adorned with Byzantine icons and other enhancements to give the building the visual character of an Orthodox house of worship. The community continued to grow through the following decades under successive pastors, building a full parish life of worship, Greek School, youth ministry, and community programs. The annual Greek Festival became a central institution of the parish's life and eventually its most visible presence in the broader Elgin community, drawing thousands of non-Greek visitors over its three-day run and generating funds that sustain much of the parish's annual budget.

For many years the founding community nurtured a dream of constructing a proper Byzantine-style church to replace the adapted Protestant building, and that dream was eventually realized when a new Byzantine church was built at the parish's home at 525 Church Road, giving Saint Sophia the architecturally authentic house of worship its founders had envisioned from the beginning.

Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church at 525 Church Road in Elgin serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Fox Valley as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, dedicated to the Holy Wisdom of God and to her three daughters, Faith, Hope, and Love.
