History

The Greek Orthodox Community of Albany was founded in 1922, when a committee of twelve Greek Orthodox immigrants met and resolved to establish a Greek Orthodox Church in the state capital. In January 1923 the community purchased the Unitarian Church at 8 Lancaster Street in downtown Albany, a building that had previously served as a Presbyterian church, and renamed it Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. The community set three objectives from the very beginning: to acquire a church building, to establish a Greek School for their children, and to purchase burial grounds for Greek Americans in Albany. After repairs and redecorations, the church opened for worship on August 15, 1923, the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. The first pastor, Reverend John K. Chrysogelos, doubled as the teacher of the Greek language school held in the building, reaching Greek Orthodox faithful from across the Capital District and as far away as Hudson, Catskill, and Little Falls.

The Lancaster Street church served the community for more than four decades until the State of New York appropriated 98.5 acres of downtown Albany in the 1960s for urban renewal, a takeover that included the Lancaster Street block. The church remained in the take-area while the community raised funds for a replacement, holding services at the Episcopal Cathedral of All Saints for more than two years until the new Parish Center at Whitehall Road was completed in November 1967. Services were held there temporarily as a church while the permanent new sanctuary was built and completed, giving the Albany community a new home on Whitehall Road that it has occupied ever since.

In October 2022, the parish celebrated its centennial with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy presided over by Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos representing Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, marking a hundred years of Greek Orthodox life in the capital of New York State.
