History

Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Sheboygan, Wisconsin holds the distinction of being the oldest Greek Orthodox church in the State of Wisconsin, its story standing as a small-scale reflection of the broader Greek-American experience across more than a century. In the late 1800s, young Greek men began arriving in Sheboygan and across the American Midwest, drawn by the many work opportunities the frontier offered. Most were single men who had left their families behind in Greece, intending to earn enough to return home with their savings, a pattern of migration common to Greek immigrants of that generation.

As the number of Greeks in Sheboygan grew, the community recognized the need for institutions to order their common life, chief among them a church where they could practice their Orthodox Christian faith. In 1906, Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church was founded, becoming part of the great American melting pot as its founders worked in the city's factories, started businesses, and built a parish that would carry their faith forward for generations. Many of the young men who had initially planned to return to Greece instead put down roots, married, raised families, and built the institutional life of the Sheboygan Greek community around their new church.

In 2006, Saint Spyridon celebrated its centennial with a weekend of festivities that included His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America and His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago presiding over a Great Vespers service, a banquet, and a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, honoring a century of Orthodox Christian witness in Wisconsin. The parish has evolved over the decades from a church serving a single ethnic community into an Orthodox church open to all, embracing parishioners of many diverse backgrounds while preserving the hand-painted Byzantine iconography and liturgical beauty of its founding tradition.

Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church at 1425 South 10th Street in Sheboygan serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Lake Michigan shoreline region as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the pioneer Greek Orthodox community of the Badger State.
