History

Saint Nicholas and Saint Marina Greek Orthodox Church of Brooklyn, New York was founded in 1975 as the Church of the Holy Trinity, serving the Greek Orthodox faithful of the Bensonhurst neighborhood. In 1976, less than a year after its founding, the original church was destroyed by fire. The community persevered through that loss and in 1981 purchased a former Congregational church building at 1822 65th Street, which was converted for Orthodox worship and rededicated under the dual patronage of Saint Nicholas and Saint Marina.

The church is dedicated to two beloved saints of the Orthodox calendar. Saint Nicholas of Myra, the fourth-century Archbishop and wonderworker venerated as a protector of sailors, travelers, and the poor, is one of the most universally beloved saints of the Christian tradition. Saint Marina the Great Martyr, commemorated on July 17, is venerated throughout the Greek Orthodox world as a defender of the faith and a powerful intercessor, particularly for those suffering from illness and spiritual warfare. Together the two patrons give the parish its distinctive dual dedication, reflecting the community's deep roots in the Greek Orthodox tradition.
