History
St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church of Troy, New York was officially founded on October 26, 1931, the feast day of Saint Demetrios. The parish was established to serve the needs of Greek immigrants who had settled in Troy, Watervliet, and the surrounding Capital District communities, families who wished to continue the traditions of their homeland, principally the practice of their Orthodox Christian faith in a new country.
The parish received its patronal name of Saint Vasilios through the generosity of Mr. William Vellis, a great benefactor of the young community who was considered the godfather of the parish on account of his support. His gift gave the fledgling congregation both its name and a foundation of communal generosity that has characterized the parish ever since.
In October 2022, the community celebrated its ninetieth anniversary with a weekend of festivities, beginning with a gala dinner dance at the Franklin Terrace Ballroom attended by clergy from sister parishes across the Capital District and by generations of St. Basil families. The celebration also recognized Father Emmanuel Mantzouris, the parish's longtime proistamenos, for the fortieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, a tenure that has shaped the community for four decades and included more than twenty years of service as a chaplain to the New York State prison system.
St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Capital District as a parish of the Direct Archdiocesan District of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community that has carried forward nearly a century of faith and Hellenic heritage in Troy and its surrounding towns.
