History

St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church of Brooklyn, New York functions as a dependency, or metochion, of the Sacred Patriarchal Monastery of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou, connecting the Brooklyn parish to a broader network of churches maintained by the monastery across the United States and placing it under the direct jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The parish is dedicated to Saint Nectarios of Aegina, one of the most beloved saints of the modern Orthodox era. Born in 1846 in Selyvria, Thrace, Nectarios felt a calling to the priesthood from his youth and was tonsured a monk while pursuing theological studies in Athens. He went on to serve as Dean of the Rizareios Seminary, distinguishing himself as a loving and devoted teacher, a prolific theologian who authored more than sixty books, and eventually a hierarch as Bishop of Pentapolis in Alexandria. Above all, he became known for a humility, Godly poverty, and patient endurance that set him apart even among the saints of his era.

Fulfilling a lifelong hope, Saint Nectarios founded a convent on the island of Aegina in a church that had formerly been dedicated to the Holy Trinity, appointing a blind nun named Xenia as the first superior of the small community. Word of his spiritual gifts spread quickly, and many sought him out for guidance and direction. After his repose in 1920, his renown only grew, as countless miracles came to be attributed to his intercession, making him one of the most widely venerated saints in the Orthodox world and inspiring the dedication of churches and shrines to his memory across the Greek diaspora, including the parish in Brooklyn.
