History

Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church of Island Park, New York, also known to its faithful as the Panaghia of Island Park, is dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church celebrated each year on August 15. The parish serves the South Shore of Nassau County on Long Island, bringing the ancient liturgical and sacramental life of the Orthodox Church to the barrier island communities between Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

 

The parish is named for the Kimisis, the Falling Asleep, of the Theotokos, the theological term used in the Orthodox Church to describe the passing of the Virgin Mary from this life into the eternal life of the Resurrection. Orthodox Christian theology understands the Dormition not as death in the ordinary sense but as a peaceful falling asleep, followed by the translation of the Theotokos body and soul into the heavenly realm, a mystery celebrated in the Church's liturgical tradition for nearly two millennia.
