History
Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Newburgh, New York was established in 1924, when the Greek immigrants who had arrived in Newburgh in the early years of the twentieth century organized the first Greek Orthodox parish in the city at 27 Chambers Street. The founding generation came seeking opportunity in the Hudson Valley, and the establishment of their church gave the growing Greek community of Orange County the spiritual home it had lacked. The first priest assigned to the parish, Father Petropoulos, served the community through the late 1930s, when he was succeeded by Father Evstratios Spyropoulos.
In November 1934, the parish acquired its current building at the corner of Fullerton Avenue and Van Ness Street, a location that has been the community's home for more than ninety years. For many years Saint Nicholas served not only its own communicants from the greater Newburgh area but also the Orthodox faithful who traveled from Rockland, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties, serving as the only Greek Orthodox church for a wide swath of the mid-Hudson Valley until parishes were eventually established in Middletown, Kingston, and West Nyack. With the completion of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in the 1960s, families from Dutchess County across the river also joined the Saint Nicholas community, extending the parish's geographic reach even further.
