History

Taxiarchai Greek Orthodox Church of Laconia, New Hampshire had its beginning in 1936, when Archbishop Athenagoras visited the city and encouraged the Orthodox faithful of the Lakes Region to organize a community of their own. Those early members took his words to heart, and the parish began with meager but determined beginnings in rooms located above the Crystal Cafe, a modest start that was true to the spirit of so many small Greek Orthodox communities across New England in that era. Many of the leaders of the community in those founding years have descendants who remain deeply involved in parish life to this day.

 

The parish is one of three communities established to serve the Orthodox faithful of northern New Hampshire alongside the Holy Trinity community in Concord and the Transfiguration community in Franklin, and in the early decades the three shared the services of a single priest. In 1959, the current church edifice at 811 North Main Street was built, erected largely through the labor of the community's founders, an act of devotion that gave the parish the permanent home it calls its own to this day.
