History
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Concord, New Hampshire was organized on July 17, 1930, when forty-five people gathered at a general meeting and elected the community's first officers, with Theodore Lambrukos as president. It was one of three parishes established that same year to serve the Orthodox Christian faithful of northern New Hampshire, alongside the communities in Franklin and Laconia, and in the early years the three shared the services of a single clergyman.
In 1931 the members paid $2,300 for a carpenter shop at 4 Union Street, the community's first church. Six hundred dollars was raised in cash and a $1,700 mortgage secured at $20 monthly. On July 23, 1931, the community incorporated and received a State Charter as the Greek Orthodox Community of Concord, and the first By-Laws were ratified by forty members. The same year the first priest arrived, the Greek language school was organized, and the parishioners themselves built many of the fixtures, pews, and furnishings of the new church. One of the most devoted early members, Michael Tsamandakis, built the bell tower and installed the new bell by himself. In 1933 the Philoptochos Society Omonoia was organized, and in 1936 a cost-sharing agreement was signed with the neighboring communities of Franklin and Laconia that remained in force until 1957.
Through World War II, forty-nine members of the community served in the armed forces, while those at home worked in defense plants, organized clothing drives, and bought War Bonds. In 1943 a choir was formed and Sunday School was organized with twenty-five children. In 1959 the community purchased its present church and parish house, with pledges and gifts secured from over one hundred members and friends of the community.
Today, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church stands at 68 North State Street in Concord as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, also providing pastoral care to the Transfiguration Church in Franklin, a community that continues the legacy of the northern New Hampshire Orthodox faithful who organized nearly a century ago.
