How Many Days Should I Spend on Dokos?
Dokos works differently from most islands: a single day of four to six hours covers what there is to see, and staying longer only makes sense for sailors or experienced campers equipped for total isolation.
Dokos fills a morning easily around Skintos Bay, the island's only natural harbor, where a small chapel dedicated to Agios Nikolaos sits above a clean, quiet beach well protected from the wind. The water here holds exceptional clarity, and swimming or snorkeling near the bay's edges gives an easy first stop after arriving by water taxi.
An afternoon suits a hike to the remains of the island's ancient settlement, since Dokos has been inhabited on and off since 5000 BC and served as a strategic port during the Byzantine period. Light trails across the rocky terrain give views back toward Hydra and the mainland, and the water off the northern coast holds the remains of what's considered the oldest known shipwreck in the world, drawing divers who come specifically for the site.
There are no shops, restaurants, or reliable drinking water on the island, so anyone visiting needs to bring in everything required for the day and carry all trash back out. Access is by private boat or water taxi from Hydra, Ermioni, or Spetses, arranged in advance since boats can't simply be hailed once on the island.
Four to six hours cover Skintos Bay and a hike to the ruins comfortably, and an overnight stay, only practical for those arriving by sailboat or prepared to camp, adds stargazing far from any light pollution. Even a short afternoon leaves a strong impression of the island's isolation, and Dokos's shipwreck site and untouched coastline give real reason to build the crossing into a day already spent on Hydra or Spetses.
