What Is Fournoi Known For?

Fournoi holds the highest concentration of documented ancient shipwrecks found anywhere in the Aegean Sea, a discovery so unexpected that even the archaeologists searching for it were caught off guard by what they found.

Fournoi is known first for that underwater archaeological record. In 2015, a joint Greek-American expedition between the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities and the RPM Nautical Foundation surveyed the archipelago's waters and located 22 shipwrecks in just under two weeks, a single discovery that added roughly 12 percent to the total number of ancient shipwrecks known across all of Greece's territorial waters at the time. Subsequent survey seasons have pushed the total past 60 documented wrecks, and the team has still explored only a small fraction of the archipelago's coastline, suggesting far more remain undiscovered.

The wrecks span an enormous stretch of history, ranging from the Archaic period around 700 BC through the late medieval period and into the 19th century, with more than half dating specifically to the Late Roman period between roughly 300 and 600 AD. Cargo recovered from the sites has included amphorae from Samos, Chios, the Black Sea region, Syria-Palestine, and even North Africa and Spain, offering researchers an unusually detailed record of how far ancient Mediterranean trade networks actually reached.

Fournoi never held major cities or harbors of its own in antiquity, but its position sat directly along key maritime crossroads connecting the Dodecanese to the northern Aegean and the mainland through the Cyclades to Asia Minor, making the islands both a critical navigational point and a genuinely hazardous stretch of water for the countless ships that sailed past. Researchers continue cataloging finds today, with plans for a future museum and underwater archaeological parks, connecting Fournoi's ongoing discoveries to Samos and Ikaria nearby.
