What Is Ikaria Known For?

Ikaria takes its name from a young man who fell out of the sky, and the sea surrounding the island still carries his name today.

Ikaria is known first for Icarus, son of the master craftsman Daedalus in Greek mythology. According to the story, father and son were imprisoned on Crete and escaped using wings Daedalus built from feathers and wax, but Icarus, ignoring his father's warning, flew too close to the sun. The wax melted, and he fell into the waters near the island, which have carried the name Icarian Sea ever since. A small rock formation off the southern coast, known locally as Icarus Rock, marks the spot where local tradition holds he fell.

The island is equally known today as one of only five recognized Blue Zones in the world, regions where residents live measurably longer and healthier lives than average, alongside Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, Nicoya in Costa Rica, and Loma Linda in California. Roughly one in three Ikarians lives past 90, and the island reports notably low rates of dementia and chronic disease compared to most Western populations. Researchers attribute that longevity to a combination of factors, including a Mediterranean diet, strong community bonds reinforced through traditional festivals called panigiria, an unhurried daily pace, and regular physical activity shaped by the island's rugged terrain.

Ikaria also carries a more recent political history, since roughly 13,000 left-wing dissidents were exiled to the island during the Greek Civil War era of the late 1940s, bringing a wave of writers, artists, and intellectuals, including composer Mikis Theodorakis, many of whom stayed on afterward and earned the island a lasting reputation for its socialist leanings, connecting Ikaria today by ferry to Samos and Fournoi.
