Getting from Aegina to Halki

If you are heading to Halki from Aegina you are making your way to a car-free island in the Dodecanese group, just off the western coast of Rhodes. It has neoclassical sponge merchant mansions around a horseshoe harbour and a pace of life that is as slow as it gets in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Halki. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Halki ferry, which runs around 3 times a week and takes around 20 hours. Flying to Rhodes and taking the short local ferry to Halki is considerably faster.

Getting there by air

Halki has no airport. The nearest airport is Rhodes. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Rhodes takes around 1 hour in the air, followed by the local ferry from Rhodes to Halki taking around 1.5 to 2 hours. Total travel time is around 5 to 6 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, fly to Rhodes and take the local ferry across to Halki. It is considerably faster than the 20-hour direct ferry from Piraeus. If you are travelling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and board the overnight Piraeus to Halki ferry, though note that Halki itself is car-free so your vehicle would need to stay at the port.
