Getting from Aegina to Kythira

If you are heading to Kythira from Aegina you are making your way to an island at the southern tip of the Peloponnese, between the Aegean and the Ionian seas. It has stone villages, deep gorges, a Venetian castle above Chora and a coastline of turquoise coves.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Kythira. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Kythira ferry, which runs twice a week and takes around 6 to 6.5 hours to the port of Diakofti. The island is also reachable by ferry from Neapoli on the southern Peloponnese, with the crossing taking around 1 hour and running daily in summer.

Getting there by air

Kythira has its own small airport with daily connections from Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Kythira takes under 1 hour in the air. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours.

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Kythira. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and board the Piraeus to Kythira ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to Diakofti port.
