Getting from Alexandroupoli to Kavala
If you are heading to Kavala from Alexandroupoli you are making your way to a port city in northern Greece on the Macedonian coast, with a Byzantine castle above the harbour, a Roman aqueduct running through the upper town and the archaeological site of Philippi just 15 kilometres inland.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Kavala. Both are mainland ports but they are not connected by sea. Getting there means traveling by road or air along the northern Greek coast.
Getting there by air
Both Alexandroupoli and Kavala have airports with connections from Athens. A direct flight between the two is not a realistic option given the short distance. The drive from Alexandroupoli to Kavala via the Egnatia motorway takes around 1.5 to 2 hours and is by far the most practical approach.
Your best option
Drive from Alexandroupoli to Kavala via the Egnatia motorway. At around 1.5 to 2 hours it is one of the most straightforward connections in northern Greece. The KTEL bus between the two cities also runs several times daily and takes a similar amount of time. Flying via Athens would add several hours to what is otherwise a short and direct road journey.
