Getting from Alonissos to Katerini

If you are heading to Katerini from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to a city at the foot of Mount Olympus on the Pierian coast of northern Greece, with the mountain rising steeply behind it and the beaches of the Pieria coast below.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Katerini. Katerini is a mainland city with no ferry connection. The most practical approach by sea is to take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos, which runs daily in summer and takes around 3 to 5 hours, and then drive north to Katerini, which takes around 2 to 2.5 hours from Volos via Thessaloniki.

Getting there by air

Katerini has no airport. The nearest airport is Thessaloniki, around 70 kilometres to the north. Alonissos has no airport either. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying to Thessaloniki, then driving or taking the KTEL bus south to Katerini, which takes around 1 hour, gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and fly to Thessaloniki, then take the KTEL bus or drive south to Katerini. It is the most time efficient approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos and drive north via the E75 motorway to Katerini, which takes around 2 to 2.5 hours from Volos.
