Getting from Alonissos to Kavala

If you are heading to Kavala from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to a port city in northern Greece on the Macedonian coast, with a Byzantine castle above the harbour, a Roman aqueduct running through the upper town and the archaeological site of Philippi just 15 kilometres inland.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Kavala. Getting there by sea and road means taking the ferry from Alonissos to Volos and then driving northeast to Kavala via Thessaloniki, which takes around 4 to 5 hours from Volos. The total journey by ferry and road takes around 7 to 8 hours.

Getting there by air

Kavala has its own airport with connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Alonissos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying to Thessaloniki, then driving to Kavala, which takes around 1.5 hours, gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours and avoids Athens entirely.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos, fly to Thessaloniki and drive to Kavala. It is the most practical approach and avoids Athens entirely. Kavala Airport is also around 30 kilometres from the city so flying directly to Kavala from Thessaloniki is another option worth checking. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos and drive northeast to Kavala via Thessaloniki.
