Getting from Athens to Astypalaia

If you are heading to Astypalaia from Athens you are going to one of the most beautiful and most undervisited islands in Greece. Astypalaia sits in an unusual geographical position between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, with a character that blends both groups. The island is shaped like a butterfly, two rocky wings joined by a narrow causeway, and the Chora above the main port is one of the finest in the Aegean, a cascade of whitewashed houses topped by a Venetian castle that lights up at night. The beaches around the island are excellent and largely uncrowded and the island has been attracting a more discerning crowd in recent years without losing its essential character.

Take the ferry

The Piraeus to Astypalaia ferry runs a few times a week year-round, taking around 10 to 12 hours. The overnight crossing is the practical approach if you want to travel by sea, arriving in the morning with the day ahead of you. The once or twice weekly frequency means planning carefully around departure days.

Getting there by air

Astypalaia has its own small airport with domestic connections from Athens. The flight takes around 1 hour and runs several times a week. This is the fastest and most practical approach for most travellers. Check the schedule carefully as the service does not run daily.

Your best option

Fly from Athens. The direct flight takes around 1 hour and is considerably more practical than the 10 to 12 hour ferry crossing for most travellers. Check the schedule on Aegean Airlines or Sky Express before booking as flights run a limited number of times per week and dates need to align with your plans.
