Getting from Mykonos to Kythnos

So you're heading from Mykonos to Kythnos. Kythnos sits in the western Cyclades between Kea and Serifos and shares something with both of them. It is quiet, unpretentious and largely off the radar of international tourism. The island is known for its thermal springs at Loutra, some of the best in the Aegean, and a main village called Chora that feels entirely untouched. If you are looking for a Greek island that has not been packaged and sold, Kythnos is a good bet.

Take the ferry

Direct ferries run between Mykonos and Kythnos through the summer season and the crossing takes around 2 to 3 hours. Kythnos is a quieter island so the schedule is less frequent than the busier Cyclades routes. Check departure times carefully before fixing your travel dates and book ahead once you find a crossing that works.

What about flying?

Kythnos does not have an airport so flying is not an option on this route. The ferry is your only way in. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Take the ferry and plan to stay long enough to properly unwind. Kythnos is not a one night island. Get to Loutra and spend a morning in the thermal springs, walk to Chora in the evening and eat at one of the small tavernas in the square. It is simple and it is exactly what it needs to be.
