Getting from Tilos to Amorgos

If you are heading to Amorgos from Tilos you are making your way from a volcanic island in the Dodecanese to the most eastern of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Tilos to Amorgos. Getting there by sea means taking the overnight ferry from Tilos to Piraeus, which runs via Rhodes and takes around 15 to 18 hours, and then boarding the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes. Flying is considerably more practical for most travelers.

Getting there by air

Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Tilos has no airport. The nearest airport is Rhodes. Taking the ferry from Tilos to Rhodes, flying from Rhodes to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry gives a total journey time of around 8 to 12 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Tilos to Rhodes and fly from Rhodes to Athens, then take the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. It is the most practical approach. Check the Tilos to Rhodes schedule before booking as departure days and times vary by season. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. If you are traveling with a car, take the overnight ferry from Tilos to Piraeus and board the conventional Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
