Getting from Volos to Alexandroupoli
If you are heading to Alexandroupoli from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to the far northeastern corner of Greece, a city on the Thracian coast close to the Turkish border and the gateway to Samothrace, relatively close in geographic terms given both sit in the northern part of Greece.
Take the ferry
There is no ferry from Volos to Alexandroupoli. Both are mainland cities connected only by road. Getting there means driving from Volos northeast via the E75 motorway and Egnatia motorway to Alexandroupoli, which takes around 4.5 to 5 hours. This avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct road connection between the two given their shared position in northern Greece.
Getting there by air
Alexandroupoli has its own airport with connections from Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos northeast to Alexandroupoli via the E75 and Egnatia motorways gives a total journey time of around 4.5 to 5 hours and avoids Athens entirely. Flying is not considerably more practical for this connection given the direct drive time. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Drive from Volos northeast via the E75 and Egnatia motorways to Alexandroupoli. At around 4.5 to 5 hours it avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct and natural road approach. If you are planning to visit Samothrace from Alexandroupoli, ferries depart daily in summer and take around 1 hour 45 minutes. Having a car gives you flexibility to explore the Thracian coast and the archaeological site of Philippi along the way.
