Getting from Volos to Igoumenitsa

If you are heading to Igoumenitsa from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to a port city on the Epirus coast in the far northwest of Greece, the main departure point for ferries to Corfu, Paxos and Italy.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Volos to Igoumenitsa. Both are mainland cities connected only by road. Getting there means driving from Volos west across central Greece to Igoumenitsa, which takes around 4 to 4.5 hours via Trikala, the E65 motorway and Ioannina. This avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct cross-country road connection between the two given their shared position in central and western Greece.

Getting there by air

Igoumenitsa has no airport. The nearest airport is Ioannina, around 83 kilometres to the east. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos west to Igoumenitsa via Trikala and Ioannina gives a total journey time of around 4 to 4.5 hours and avoids Athens entirely. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
