Getting from Volos to Lavrio

If you are heading to Lavrio from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to the third ferry port serving Athens, on the southeastern tip of Attica around 30 minutes from Athens Airport. It is the departure point for ferries to Kea, Kythnos and several other Cycladic islands.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Volos to Lavrio. Getting there means driving from Volos south via the E75 motorway and Athens ring road to Lavrio, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours. Lavrio sits on the southeastern tip of Attica around 30 minutes from Athens Airport making it a convenient connection that avoids crossing the city to Piraeus entirely.

Getting there by air

Lavrio has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens International, around 30 kilometres to the northwest. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos south to Lavrio via the E75 motorway gives a total journey time of around 3.5 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Volos south via the E75 motorway and Athens ring road to Lavrio. At around 3.5 to 4 hours it is the most direct and practical approach. If you are heading to Kea or Kythnos from Lavrio, ferries to both islands run frequently throughout the day in summer and the crossing to Kea takes around 1 hour.
