Getting from Volos to Lefkada

If you are heading to Lefkada from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to an island in the Ionian Sea connected to the mainland by a causeway, on the opposite side of Greece. It has some of the finest beaches in Europe on its west coast with sheer white limestone cliffs dropping to turquoise water.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Volos to Lefkada. Lefkada has no main ferry port as it is linked to the mainland by a floating bridge. Getting there means driving from Volos west across central Greece to Lefkada, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours via Trikala, Arta and Preveza. This avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural cross-country road connection between the two given their shared position in central and western Greece.

Getting there by air

Lefkada has no airport. The nearest airport is Preveza, around 22 kilometres from Lefkada Town. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos west to Lefkada via Trikala and Preveza gives a total journey time of around 3.5 to 4 hours and avoids Athens entirely. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Volos west to Lefkada via Trikala, Arta and Preveza. At around 3.5 to 4 hours it avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct and natural road approach. Having a car makes this route straightforward and the drive through central Greece via Trikala is a good one. From Preveza the short approach to Lefkada across the floating bridge takes only a few minutes.
