Getting from Volos to Poros
If you are heading to Poros from Volos you are making your way from a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula to a small island in the Saronic Gulf, on the opposite side of Greece. Poros sits just 200 metres from the Peloponnese mainland and the narrow channel between them creates one of the most charming harbour settings in Greece.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Volos to Poros. Getting there means driving from Volos to Piraeus, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours via the E75 motorway, and then boarding the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Poros, which takes around 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes with several daily departures. Alternatively drive to Galatas on the eastern Peloponnese coast and take the short local ferry across to Poros, which takes only a few minutes and runs constantly throughout the day, though the drive from Volos to Galatas takes around 5 to 5.5 hours via Athens and Corinth.
Getting there by air
Poros has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with limited connections from Athens. Driving from Volos to Piraeus and boarding the Saronic ferry to Poros gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Drive from Volos to Piraeus and board the Saronic ferry to Poros. It is the most practical approach. The drive from Volos to Piraeus takes around 3 to 3.5 hours via the E75 motorway. If you are traveling with a car, drive to Galatas on the eastern Peloponnese coast for the short local ferry across to Poros, which avoids Piraeus entirely though adds considerable driving time.
