About Sakis Rouvas

Early Life

Sakis Rouvas, born Anastasios Rouvas on January 5, 1972, in Mantouki, a suburb of Corfu City, is the eldest son of Konstantinos Rouvas, an ambulance driver, and Maria-Ioanna Panaretou. After his parents divorced in 1984, he moved in with his paternal grandparents in the village of Potamos and took on small jobs to help support his family. A gifted athlete, he joined Greece's national track and field team at 15 as a pole vaulter, and his best vault of 4.40 meters stood as the Ionian Islands record for many years. As a teenager he taught himself guitar, performed Elvis Presley and Beatles covers at his school graduation, and was later discovered by future manager Ilias Psinakis while singing at the club To Ekati.

Musical Style & Sound

Rouvas identifies primarily as a pop-rock artist. Elvis Presley was his earliest and most prominent influence, followed by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, and Michael Jackson. Rather than following the commercially dominant Laïko path, he built his career on Greek pop, often blending international production with Greek elements, as with the bouzouki-flavored "Shake It." Early critics tended to describe his appeal as image-driven, but after he studied with American vocal coach Raz Kennedy in the late 1990s, reviewers increasingly recognized his range, vocal power, and versatility.

Career Rise

Rouvas made his public debut at the 1991 Thessaloniki Song Festival with "Par'ta," and his self-titled debut album that year topped the Greek Albums Chart. After a run of hit albums with PolyGram, he moved to Minos EMI in 1998 with "Kati Apo Mena," whose music videos were directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. He represented Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 in Istanbul with "Shake It," finishing third, co-hosted Eurovision 2006 in Athens with Maria Menounos, and returned to the contest in 2009 with "This Is Our Night," placing seventh. His 2008 hit "+ Se Thelo" became a defining track, and on July 1, 2009, he drew 40,000 people to the Panathenaic Stadium, the highest attendance for a solo artist in Greek music history. Beyond music, he has hosted The X Factor Greece, served as a coach on The Voice of Greece, won the Karolos Koun Award for his portrayal of Dionysus in Euripides' "The Bacchae," and appeared in "Chevalier," Greece's official submission for the 89th Academy Awards. His 2021 album "Sta Kalitera Mou" was the best-selling Greek album of the year, and in 2025 he launched his own imprint, Sakis Rouvas Music, in collaboration with Panik Records, ending a 27-year affiliation with Minos EMI.

Diaspora Impact

Rouvas has carried Greek pop to international audiences for more than three decades. His two Eurovision appearances and his co-hosting of the 2006 contest made him one of the most recognizable Greek faces across Europe, and in 2008 he toured North America, Australia, and South Africa with Antonis Remos. He has also performed across France, including at the Olympia in Paris, and his 2025 summer tour included a stop in London, keeping him closely connected to Greek communities abroad.
