About the Beach
Agios Pavlos Beach is a remote and historically significant coastal sanctuary situated on the rugged southern coast of Crete near the mouth of the Eligia Gorge featuring a landscape of dark sand and large pebbles that is bordered by the dense Selouda pine forest in a primitive environment that is accessible primarily by boat or a challenging hike along the coastal E4 path where the centerpiece of the beach is a tiny eleventh-century Byzantine chapel built of rough stone in honor of Saint Paul who is said to have visited the site during his journey to Rome providing a profound sense of isolation and spiritual peace within the wild and untouched terrain of the Sfakia region.
