About the Beach
Kokkinokastro Beach is a visually striking coastal area located on the eastern coast of the island and is famous for its unique and vibrant geological features. Its name which means 'Red Castle' refers to the imposing deep reddish cliffs and iron rich soil that frame the bay and the nearby small islet which was once connected to the mainland. The landscape is a vibrant mix of deep red earth green pine trees and the sea creating one of the most photographed and significant natural sites in the Aegean. The area is believed to be the site of the ancient city of Ikos and remnants of ancient walls can still be seen in the vicinity adding a layer of historical mystery to its raw and primitive beauty. The dramatic verticality of the cliffs provides a sense of grandeur and seclusion that makes this beach a hallmark of the islands wild coastal character.
