History

The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Hegewisch has served the Orthodox Christian faithful of Chicago's far southeast side since 1924, making it one of the enduring pillars of Greek Orthodox life in the region. The community opened the doors of its first church building in 1926, establishing a permanent spiritual home for the Greek immigrants who had settled in Hegewisch, drawn like so many of their generation by the promise of industrial work in one of Chicago's hardworking neighborhood communities.

In 1936 the original church was destroyed by fire. The community did not waver. Within a year a new church had been built at 13631 South Brainard Avenue, and on September 6, 1937, the rebuilt Assumption Church opened at the location it has called home ever since.

Today, the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Hegewisch continues its ministry on the southeast side of Chicago as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago, preserving the Orthodox Christian faith and Hellenic heritage of its community for more than a century.
