History

The few Greek families who had settled on Long Island in the years before 1972 carried with them the same impulse that had driven the early Greek immigrants to America at the turn of the century: after putting down roots in a new place, their first thoughts turned to perpetuating their Orthodox faith and their Greek cultural heritage. In the hearts and minds of those founding families, 1972 will always be the inaugural year of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Hicksville, the year they began pursuing their vision of establishing a Greek Orthodox church and community on central Long Island. A generous Episcopalian priest opened his heart and his church to the Greek Orthodox faithful, making his building available during those formative years while the community organized and built toward something permanent.

From the Archdiocese's perspective, Holy Trinity was formally accepted on December 26, 1973, and granted its charter on October 21, 1977. On September 10, 1978, following the Lord's command, the community broke ground at Field Avenue, and on Palm Sunday 1980 the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the beautiful new building, a brick structure with a white domed roof and white arch colonnade that became a landmark of the Hicksville community. In April 1990 the community decided to add an Educational Center, which opened its doors six months later to accommodate the many students eager to receive a Greek Orthodox education in a modern environment. The community subsequently purchased two adjoining properties, adding further capacity for its growing programs. On Sunday, October 12, 2003, the Holy Altar was formally consecrated, fulfilling a long-held dream of the community after nearly a year of preparation.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 20 Field Avenue in Hicksville serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of central Nassau County as a parish of the Direct Archdiocesan District of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, one of the most important Greek Orthodox communities on Long Island, its Greek School producing some of the highest-scoring students in the Archdiocese and its ministries weaving together generations of faithful in the spirit of the community its founders built from a handful of families and a borrowed church.
