History
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell, Massachusetts holds one of the most distinguished places in the history of the Orthodox Christian faith in America. The parish traces its origins to 1893, when Michael Iatron founded the Washington-Acropolis Society in Lowell and the community began to take shape, making Holy Trinity the fourth Greek Orthodox parish established in America and the first in the Boston area. It was served in those early years by Father Kallinikos Dilbey.
The church building that defines Holy Trinity today was completed in 1908, designed by Lowell architect Henry L. Rourke and influenced by the great Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Built in the Byzantine Revival style with a golden dome, rich mosaics, and detailed iconography, it was the first church in the United States built specifically to house Greek Orthodox worship, a distinction that sets it apart from every other Greek Orthodox church in America. The Hellenic American Academy, established March 4, 1906 and originally known as the Greek Parochial School, was founded alongside the church to educate the children of Lowell's growing Greek immigrant community.
The church's historical significance extends beyond its architecture. On June 16, 1940, a young deacon named Demetrios Tsakos was ordained to the priesthood at Holy Trinity. He would go on to become Archbishop Iakovos of America, the most influential leader of the Greek Orthodox Church in the Western Hemisphere, who served as Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America from 1959 to 1996 and marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama in 1965. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 13, 1977, and is a contributing property within the Lowell National Historical Park.
Today, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church stands at 62 Lewis Street in the Acre neighborhood of downtown Lowell as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, one of five Orthodox churches in the greater Lowell area and the most historically significant Greek Orthodox church building in the United States.
