History
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of New Rochelle had its beginnings when Contilia Lazarus organized the first group of approximately thirty families from Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Yonkers, and White Plains in her Mount Vernon home to discuss the formation of a Greek Orthodox community in Westchester County. That gathering led the community to rent a storefront in Genung's Department Store, where they held their first services and gave the new parish its name: Holy Trinity.
In the decades that followed, the parish grew and moved through successive homes as the congregation expanded. Holy Trinity purchased what its members regarded as a dream facility, a historic white church building acquired from a Protestant community, before the community eventually turned its sights toward building something of its own. A building fund was organized, property was purchased on Mill Road and North Avenue in New Rochelle, and ground was broken for a new Community Center that also served as the church until the permanent sanctuary was completed. The cornerstone for the present church building was laid, and Archbishop Iakovos blessed the new church when its doors opened. The building was formally consecrated in a ceremony that marked the culmination of decades of community sacrifice and growth.
The parish celebrated its seventy-fifth Diamond Anniversary as a milestone of endurance and community life that spanned three generations of Westchester County Greek-American families, and in the years following its eightieth anniversary continued to build on that foundation. A fire that severely damaged the church shortly before Christmas required the community to hold services in the Social Hall through the restoration period, a test the parish met with characteristic resilience.
