History
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Port Charlotte, Florida grew from one of the most modest of beginnings: in late 1989, a small group of perhaps five families recognized their shared desire for a Greek Orthodox church in the Port Charlotte area. Their inquiries to other Orthodox families in Charlotte County yielded a remarkable early response, and by Easter of 1990 the community was celebrating the Paschal service at the Port Charlotte Civic Association building, with Father Stephanos Vlahapoulos officiating.
In May of 1990, Father Nicholas Triantafilou, acting as Vicar of the Atlanta Diocese, visited the fledgling community and offered guidance in formal organization within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. The community launched quickly: acolytes, a choir, and a Philoptochos Society were all established in that first year, and the parish began operating as the Holy Trinity Chapel. The first Grecian Festival was held in October 1990 at Laishley Park in Punta Gorda. In March of 1991 the community was formally incorporated as the Greek Orthodox Church of Charlotte County, Florida, and the first Parish Council elections were held. By the close of 1991 membership had grown to approximately 50 pledged family units, and a full range of religious services including a waterfront Epiphany service, Sunday School, Greek language school, and religious instruction classes had all been established.
Architect Thomas Huff of Punta Gorda was retained to design renovations to existing buildings on the parish property at 24411 Rampart Boulevard. A kitchen building with expanded cooking and serving space was added in 1995 to support the annual festivals that had become a beloved community tradition since 1993. Through the early 2000s the parish continued to grow, and by 2001 a second architect was engaged to design a larger community center to serve the expanding congregation.
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 24411 Rampart Boulevard in Port Charlotte serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Charlotte County as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community that grew from five families and a shared dream into a full parish life in one of Florida's fastest-growing Gulf Coast communities.
